What is that Windows Key?Ever wonder what that 'windows' key is in between the Ctrl and the Alt?
We've found a couple of very helpful uses for it. First of all, if you
just press it all by itself, it pulls up the Start menu. This comes in
handy when your mouse has stopped working! If you hold down the windows
key and press E - it will pull up Windows Explorer. This is especially
useful in Windows XP where Windows Explorer is buried a few levels in
the menu system. And, best of all ... if you hold down the windows key
and press D - it will pop up your desktop, no matter where you are to
start with. SpywareJust when you think you may have gotten viruses under control ... here comes the next thing you need to protect against - spyware. You download spyware to your computer unwittingly when you click on certain ads while browsing the web. You may even click there by accident – but, as far as your computer is concerned, you have ‘invited’ this program. Therefore, anti-virus software will not protect you. To read more about how spyware works, read the article on CNET: How to Stop your PC from Spying on you. There is a free ‘spyware search and destroy’ program called ‘SpyBot’ that you can read about and download at: http://security.kolla.de. Jim is running this program as a matter of course for any client who is complaining about lots of pop-up ads while browsing the internet, or of general slow-down in their browsing experience. Magnify a browser screenIf you have trouble reading the small print on some websites, here’s a little trick. You need to have a mouse that has the special rolling button (wheel) used for scrolling. With the fine print web site on your screen: hold down the Ctrl key and roll the wheel down to magnify (bigger). Hold down the control key and roll the wheel up to return to previous magnification (smaller). GoToMyPCWe want all of our clients to get this web-based remote control program. It's advertised as a way for you to remotely access your computer from anywhere - and it certainly is - but, we want you to get it so that WE can access your computer from anywhere and help you when you are in need. When we get a support call from a client who has GoToMyPC, we can simply say "Wait a minute while I log on to your computer and take control." We can then see the problem for ourselves, and show you what to do. Yes, you will see what we're doing when we take control - it's like a ghost is operating your computer - it's SOOO cool. And you don't need any software or special configuration to make it work. All you need is an internet connection - a fast one hopefully. To check it out (I believe there is a free trial period) you can click here. You've probably heard of this software before because thousands of websites
